The Shelter for the Homeless, Inc. is the only regional shelter in lower Fairfield County serving the four-town area of Stamford, Darien, Greenwich and New Canaan. The shelter typically houses 60-85 men, and up to 110 during extreme weather months. In addition to providing overnight emergency beds for men, the shelter operates a drop-in day program that provides case management services for men and women. Our doors are open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
For 25 years our donors have made it possible for us to provide services for some of the neediest and most vulnerable members of our community. The goal is to help clients become self-sufficient and then find appropriate, longer-term housing.
The Emergency Shelter offers a point of re-entry into the community for individuals who might otherwise remain homeless or displaced. The shelter acts as an advocate for housing for the homeless and work with area developers to build the housing that we hope will eventually eliminate homelessness from our community.
The Shelter for the Homeless, Inc. provides a valuable service for all local residents. Most important it assures that some of the poorest and most vulnerable members of our community have a respite from living on the streets, a hardship which can be completely dehumanizing, as well as dangerous.
